Playing with Digital Storytelling seems an invaluable blog.  Posted on the Teaching with Technology blog the reader is instructed on how to download everything necessary for, then undertake the job of creating a silent film with text placards to front load content in a text.  If I can master this exercise it will prove to be far more valuable that the money I paid for this course.

The blog has links to all of the necessary programs and the cost for purchasing everything necessary is under $5.

Reading Comprehension Exercises is written by a parent (Rick) who advises the use of comprehension exercises while teaching their child to read.  The gist of the article is that while a child is reading aloud or being read to the parent can ask questions about the text, characters, settings.  Rick states that your child's response will tell you whether or not he or she understood the text."

The blog goes on to state that in addition to asking simple questions that test recollection and comprehension the parent should have the child make predictions about the story.  The parents should also have their kids explain main points or the author's theme, have the child tell a portion of the story through the eyes of a certain character, or create a visualization of the story.

Finally, Richard Bryne's  Try Wikibrains for Brainstorm instructs the reader on how to create a brainstorm web by entering one word, words, or a phrase. After entering a word the user is prompted to add more words by completing the phrase, "Makes me think off..." Each new word or phrase that is entered is added to the word web.  A student can rearrange the circles however they choose to create various phrases..

Information Station! Parent Teacher Blog Spot! Sharing information, ideas, and inspiration!

Welcome to Room 105’s Information Station! As you may know the Principal, staff and Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) are working together to raise funds in an effort to increase the number of computers and other educational technology tools the school is able to offer in teaching our students. The staff, parents, and PTA are volunteering their time to provide our students with state-of-the-art learning tools. It is my hope that my students’ parents will offer their help and get involved! When it comes to providing the students of ______School with the best tools it is “All hands on deck.”

I realize some parents are skeptical of the use of new technology in the classrooms and I think an opposing view is healthy! Using this blog I will be able to offer my thoughts, update all progress we make towards our goal. and you will be able to post your thoughts as well. My dedication to this project stems from my believe that students need to be college-ready and eventually prepared to join the 21st century workforce. Having them become familiar with and use these tools better prepares them for the future.

The two new educational tools I would hope to acquire with the raised funds include more laptops for Room 105's computer lab. This will allow your students to take more Accelerated Reader quizzes and have more EPGY and FlexMath time in class. Also, I look forward to having an ELMO Digital Visual Presenter which will enable me to project lessons and create a more interactive environment. This also excites your students when we have student-led lessons...participation sky-rockets!!!

I am very excited to post updates and hear what you have to offer! As the staff, parents, and the PTA work together to raise the funds to supply educational tools for our school's student body it is vital that all views are aired and discussed. Please feel free to post a comment below. Constructive criticism and innovative ideas can only help us as we work together to advocate our students' educations!

Best,

Mr. G.
